Birthday fuzz and reverb.
Today we are combining Ghost Ridge Super Series with Germanium Birthday Frybread Fuzz. These two get a long like peanut butter and jelly, so come along as we make us a tasty fuzz sandwich.
We’ll start off each clip with a quick sample of the bypass signal, before adding Frybread Fuzz and Ghost Ridge.
0:00 - 1:05 Light touch, Heavy fuzz.
In this example, we’ll begin by adding a generous helping of hall reverb. This creates some space for our guitar to move around in. Next, we’ll give our signal a big boost by adding Germanium B-day Frybread Fuzz! With the controls all just a little past noon, we get a warm and wooly fuzz that responds well to the lighter playing dynamics in this clip.
1:06 - 1:53 The more you dig in, the more you get.
Let’s explore a similar Frybread Fuzz setting with heavier playing dynamics. When digging in, you’ll notice more bite, longer sustain, and an overall more aggressive sound thanks to Frybread’s excellent dynamic response. Adding a splash of spring reverb helps to round out this sound and give us a vibey, vintage feel.
1:54 - 2:38 Moving fuzz.
Next, let’s make things expansive using the plate setting. We’ll also use some Ghost Ridge’s onboard modulation to add some movement to our reverb. Using the plate setting adds a brightness to the reflections, making the reverb trails more prominent. After that, we’ll use Frybread with the gain all the way down to boost our clean signal. We aren’t aiming for high gain here, just a little hair when we dig in.
2:39 - 3:45 Warm wall of fuzz.
In this clip, we set the fuzz control just past three o’clock while playing on the neck pickup. This combo gives a warm and smooth sounding lead fuzz tone with tons of sustain. Adding Ghost Ridge in the hall setting, we get a huge wall of warm reflections with a gradual decay.
3:46 - 4:43 Funky and fuzzy.
Now, let’s check out some room setting. In this example, mix and depth are set fairly high to give you the feeling of playing in a large reflective space. This creates a big and impactful reverb that doesn’t hang around too long. Next we’ll add Frybread with the gain dialed in to about nine o’clock. This setting gives us a ragged fuzz that is simultaneously bass heavy but still articulate enough for complex chord voicings.
4:44 - 5:24 Over and out.
Lastly, let’s go back to the plate setting and see if we can’t cook up something interesting. You’ll notice that the plate setting has a slightly metallic quality to the reflections. These added upper harmonics can be helpful in cutting though a dense mix and keep reverb heavy passages from getting too muddy. Finally, we’ll add Frybread with the fuzz control set just below noon. This setting gives us solidly boosted mids and lows, a smoothed out treble response, and an organic breakup that sits beautifully in most situations.
Let's make some noise!
Now that we've explored the possible, let's go and create the impossible. This is a special birthday run, so when it's gone, it's gone. We're grateful to celebrate the Frybread Fuzz story in this festive way—complete with germanium warmth and birthday joy that'll make every note feel like a celebration. 🥳
