Wave Reflector

Rooted in the story of Old Man (Napi) and the berries reflecting on the water.

In the Water reflects and refracts your signal like the surface of water, from short surface ripples to blooming octaves that surround you as you go deeper. Underneath your reflected signal, a single note can swell into a five-voice drone. In the Water is a reminder that no matter how deep you go, your creativity is always with you.

Key Sound Characteristics

  • Reflections: Your signal reversed and reflected at random angles and pitches across the stereo space. Left, the echoes flutter with a rippling movement. Right, the reflections stretch out in length while octaves bloom above and below.

  • Ripples: Dials in the amount of ripple in your reflections. Left is a single clean reflection. Right pushes to the edge of oscillation. This is the water never holding still.

  • Wave Gen (five-voice drone): Hold the switch, play one note, and it expands into a thick five-voice pad. The root, two detuned voices, an octave up, and a voice three octaves up. Each voice drifts and pans on its own, so the drone never sits still.

  • Waveform Filter: The low-pass filter for the generated drone. Left is dark and nearly muted. Right is bright and in your face. The filter subtly drifts on its own, so a held drone keeps evolving.

  • Waveform Rez: The resonance control for the waveform's filter. Left is a smooth drone. Right is a more pronounced, aggressive tone.

  • Deep Control: Map an expression pedal or send MIDI (CC, Clock, Note, and Pitch messages) to expand what In the Water can do.

Here's how Old Man's story shaped the sound.

In the Water is a tribute to my Blackfeet (Amskaapi Piikuni) heritage, rooted in the story of Old Man (Napi) and the berries in the water. Old Man stood on the bank of a stream and saw berries in the water. He dove in to gather them but found nothing. Each time he surfaced, he saw them again. Frustrated, he tied rocks to his legs to stay under, and nearly drowned. Exhausted, he dragged himself to shore and rested under a bush. He looked up and finally saw the berries hanging above his head. What he'd been chasing in the reflections had been there all along. A reminder that your creativity was already there, and In the Water just helped you get there.

We really took a different approach on this one. Generally, pedals are built to nail a specific flavor of effect (chorus, overdrive, fuzz). We ended up not starting that way. Instead we thought about Old Man's story and what it might have felt like as he dove into the water. From the reflections on the surface to the depths below, we wanted to capture the sound of submersion, while representing the refraction of light as it pierces the water.

In the Water's design carries three waves and two circles. The three waves move from light blue down into deep blue, marking the water getting darker the deeper you dive. The two circles are the berries from Old Man's story, reflecting each other across the surface the same way your signal reflects back through the pedal.

Flip it over and you'll see the full story of why In the Water exists and how my Blackfeet heritage shaped it.

You're not buying a pedal. You're joining musicians who see their pedalboards as expressions of their values and their sound. We believe the tools we use to create should carry the same intention and meaning as the music we make.

That's how we keep Blackfeet culture alive. Not behind glass, but in action.
